Mahdi: who told you money is everything, Ali? Certainly, there are things money can't buy. This is the most important fact about money which, unfortunately, very few people try to understand. Most people think if they have sufficient funds, they can do whatever they like: they can realize their hopes, build their future, live in comfortable circumstances, buy whatever they can think of and, last but not least, recruit others to serve them. In other words, they think they can subdue others just because they have money. Money is for them the means to enjoy life. They're unaware of the fact that money is merely a means of exchange




مهدي : من قال لك إن المال هو كل شيء يا علي؟ فهناك بالتأكيد أشياء لا يستطيع المال شراؤها وهذه أهم حقيقة تتعلق بالمال, ولسوء الحظ قليل من الناس من يحاول فهمها . إن معظم الناس يظن أنه إذا امتلك أموالا كافية فهو يقدر على أن يفعل ما يشاء : أن يحقق آماله وأن يبني مستقبله وأن يعيش في ظروف مريحة وأن يشتري كل ما يخطر على باله, وأخيرا وليس آخرا, أن يجند الآخرين لخدمته. وبعبارة أخرى يظن أنه يقدر على إخضاع الآخرين لخدمته. لا لشيء, إلا لأنه يملك المال . فالمال بالنسبة إليه هو الوسيلة للاستمتاع بالحياة وهو لا يدرك حقيقة أن المال ليس سوى وسيلة تبادل.





Ali: I disagree with you about most points. I admit money is a means of exchange but that shouldn't necessarily mean it's not a means to enjoy life. Just imagine a penniless person trying to enjoy life. Such a person is merely a bagger. Could a penniless person realize his hopes an ambitions? Could he build a future? Could he live in comfortable circumstances? I don't think he would be able to have anything done because he would then have to pay for things he wants to have done. Is that right




علي : أختلف معك في معظم هذه النقاط, فأنا أقر بأن المال وسيلة للتبادل, ولكن ذلك يجب أن لا يعني بالضرورة بأنه ليس وسيلة للاستمتاع بالحياة. ما عليك إلا أن تتصور رجلا مفلسا يحاول الاستمتاع بالحياة, فمثل هذا الرجل ليس سوى متسول , وهل يستطيع المتسول أن يحقق آماله وطموحاته؟ وهل يقدر على بناء مستقبل أو العيش في ظروف مريحة؟ لا أعتقد بأنه ستمكن من عمل أي شيء لأنه عند ذلك سوف يضطر إلى أن يدفع ثمن الأشياء التي يريد القيام بها . أليس ذلك صحيحا؟


Mahdi: probably you misunderstand my statement. I'm mainly concerned about one particular point, which I think you haven't been able to grasp, namely, we cannot enjoy life even if we have money. We can make it comfortable to a certain extent. Enjoyment is something and comfort is something else. I guess you're going to say you cannot enjoy life if you're not living comfortably. That would be a good argument, but you cannot enjoy life if you're sick, no matter how much money you have. On other hand, you cannot buy love for money. Countless wealthy people seem to be depressed for the sole reason that they cannot achieve their emotional targets




مهدي: ربما أسأت فهم قولي, فأنا أهتم بصورة رئيسية بنقطة خاصة جدا أظن انك لم تتمكن من فهمها و أعني بذلك: أننا لا نستطيع الاستمتاع بالحياة حتى ولو ملكنا المال. فنحن نستطيع أن نجعل الحياة مريحة إلى حد ما , فالاستمتاع شيء والراحة شيء آخر , وأنا أخمن بأنك ستقول بأنني لا أستطيع الاستمتاع بالحياة إذا لم أكن أعيش بارتياح. أن هذا جدل منطقي ولكنك لا تستطيع الاستمتاع بالحياة إن كنت مريضا مهما كانت أموالك كثيرة , ومن جهة أخرى فأنت لا تستطيع شراء الحب بالمال إذ هناك عدد كبير من أثرياء يبدو أنهم مكتئبون لسبب وحيد هو أنهم لا يستطيعون تحقيق أهدافهم العاطفية.

Ali: do you mean life can only be a source of enjoyment when you're healthy and wealthy? A healthy but a poor person has got to be depressed. Physical health isn't enough in itself. Money is an important factor that enables a healthy person to enjoy life. Isn't that right



علي: أتعني أن الحياة لا يمكن أن تكون مصدر متعة إلا عندما تصبح صحيح الجسم وثريا ؟ إن شخصا صحيح الجسم مع فقره لا بد أن يكون مكتئبا , فالصحة الجسمية ليست كافية في حد ذاتها . المال عامل مهم يمكن الرجل الصحيح من الاستمتاع بالحياة أليس كذلك؟



Mahdi: what I mean is money isn't everything in life. Even if you have huge sums of money, you won't be able to enjoy life because you understand enjoyment as being sensual pleasure. sensual pleasure is really a transitory and temporary that many people can enjoy . I think, we should be mainly concerned about about lasting pleasure, pleasure that would open up in front of us limitless vistas of spiritual and psychological joy that money cannot do. You should know the more money you have, the more worried you will get



مهدي: ما أقصد قوله إن المال ليس كل شيء في الحياة إذ حتى لو كنت تملك مبالغ ضخمة من المال فلن تكون قادرا على أن تستمتع بالحياة لأنك تفهم الاستمتاع على انه مسرة حسية , والمسرة الحسية هي في الواقع مسرة زائلة و مؤقتة يستطيع كثير من الناس الاستمتاع بها , فانا أعتقد أن علينا أن نهتم بصورة رئيسة بالمسرات الدائمة, تلك المسرات التي تفتح أمامنا آفاقا لا حدود لها من الفرح النفسي والروحي مما لا يستطيع المال فعله. ويجب أن تعلم أنك كلما ملكت مزيدا من المال أصبحت أكثر قلقا.

لماذا يعبد بعض الناس المال؟
شيلوك: لا أستطيع أن أتصور جيوبي فارغة لحظة واحدة . لست أعلم لكني أحسب أن الناس أغبياء لدرجة أنهم لا يفهمون بأن المال هو بلسم الحياة . كم أتمنى لو أنهم عرفوا بأنه كل شيء في الحياة .
